Vegan pesto pasta is one of my favorite dishes. It's so warm, comforting, and filling. One of my favorite sauces to put on pasta is vegan basil pesto. I've never really liked to put marinara on pasta, and Alfredo isn't traditionally vegan. Vegan pesto sauce recipe is so light and fresh and I love how it doesn't require a lot of time and ingredients to make.

If you're wondering is pesto vegan, pesto sauce is not usually vegan because it has Parmesan cheese in it, but this simple vegan pesto recipe is dairy free and does not contain any animal products.

This recipe is quick, delicious, and simple. All of those things are very appealing to me when making a recipe.

You'll need a food processor to make this easy vegan pesto sauce. The one I use is Kitchen Aid brand. It doesn't look like they still sell it, but I found one very similar. You can buy it here. It does a really good job of blending it all up and not leaving big chunks of food. Also, the pieces are dishwasher safe, which I love.

The main ingredient in this pesto sauce is basil. I suggest buying a basil plant rather than just buying a batch of picked basil. We got ours at Harmons. Trader Joe's has them too. It's not much more expensive to buy the basil plant and you get so much more. You can harvest the basil leaves you need from it, then keep growing your plant so that you can make pesto from it again and again.

This recipe also calls for pine nuts. Pine nuts aren't the cheapest. I recommend buying them from the bins where you can scoop them yourself and just buy as much as you need. It's much more budget-friendly than buying the prepackaged pine nuts.

If you don't want to use pine nuts, then you're probably wondering what are good substitutes for pine nuts in pesto? You can use walnuts, pecans, almonds, or even sunflower seeds.

My favorite ways to eat this sauce are on pasta or bread. I like to put it in a bowl of pasta with broccoli and peas. You could do this with lots of other veggies too.

To make a vegan pesto pasta recipe, I make 20 oz of spaghetti noodles, a head of broccoli (chopped up), and 1/2 cup of peas. Toss them all together and top with some salt. Now you have a crazy delicious vegan dinner that's not too much work to make.

I also like to put some pesto on top of slices of French bread, then I put it in the oven at 400 degrees for about 3-5 minutes so that it's really warm. If you're wondering whether or not French bread is vegan, this is a helpful article I recommend reading.

Most pesto sauces have Parmesan cheese, and honestly I don't even miss it in this recipe. I started making my pesto sauce vegan before I even was vegan. I don't think the cheese adds much flavor and it makes it cost more. If you feel like it's missing something, you could try adding some nutritional yeast.

Another delicious way to use this dairy-free pesto sauce would be on pizza. It would be really good with Minimalist Baker's Vegan Gluten-Free Pizza Crust. I hope you love making this!
