Naturally, you’re probably wondering if these products are as great, safe, or environmentally friendly as claimed.
You may also be wondering if one diaper subscription is better than the other.
So, Hello Bello vs Honest Co – Let’s compare!
About Hello Bello
Hello Bello is a baby care company that was founded in March of 2019 by Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. The company sells affordable, plant-based products – including diapers, wipes, and more.
Hello Bello strives to make it easy for parents to choose safe, eco-friendly, and affordable products.
About The Honest Company
The Honest Company was founded in 2012 by Jessica Alba. The company sells baby, beauty, and home products – including diapers, wipes, cleaning supplies, makeup, and more.
The Honest Co is all about providing safe and sustainable products. They have what is called their “no list” and this list contains over 2500 ingredients/chemicals that they refuse to use in their products.
Hello Bello vs Honest Diapers
Now let’s take a closer look at diapers from both companies.
Both diaper subscriptions offer both diapers and training pants.
However, if you want a combination bundle of both diapers and training pants, you only get that option with Hello Bello at this time.
And, if you prefer overnight diapers, that’s only an option if you use Honest Co.
For simplicity’s sake, we’re going to approach this comparison as if we are only interested in purchasing regular diapers.
After you’ve chosen the diaper size you need, then you will be able to choose the design. Both companies offer a variety of very cute diaper designs.
What diaper sizes are available?
Both Hello Bello and Honest Co. offer diaper sizes that range from newborn through size 6.
Hello Bello also offers training pants that range from size 12-24M to 4T-5T.
The Honest Company’s training pants sizes range from 2T-3T to 4T to 5T. Honest’s overnight diapers are available in sizes 3 to 6.
Auto-ship and diaper counts
Both subscriptions come with 7 packs of diapers and 4 packs of baby wipes. Hello Bello ships every 5 weeks and Honest Co ships every 4 weeks.
Are you wondering how the diaper counts compare?
For this comparison, based on size 2 diapers on both, here is how they compared:
- Hello Bello: 210 diapers per bundle
- Honest Co: 224 diapers per bundle
Before adding any coupon codes or promos, Hello Bello currently gives you a price of $69.99 and Honest Co didn’t give the price right away.
In order to see the price for this comparison, I had to create an account, which I wasn’t very thrilled about. Once I did that, the price it gave me was $82.99 (this included an already factored-in subscription discount of $20.74).
For Honest Co, I was able to enter a promo code that lowered the price for the first month down to $58.09.
For Hello Bello, I redeemed a promo code that brought the first month’s price down to $59.49.
So, for the first month, as far as price goes, Honest Co is the clear winner. But, once month 2 rolls around, Hello Bello steps up and takes first place.
Based on these initial numbers (without the promo codes since you can only use them for your first month), the breakdown per diaper ends up being 37 cents for Honest Co and 33 cents for Hello Bello.
Calculations are based on size 2 diapers at the time of writing this.
So, which is cheaper – Hello Bello diaper subscription or Honest Co? Based on the websites’ subscription bundles, the answer is Hello Bello.
The diapers and their materials
Are Hello Bello diapers non-toxic? Are Honest diapers non-toxic?
That depends on how you define the term.
Both Honest Co. and Hello Bello’s diapers are made with a combination of plant-based and traditional materials.
Both diapers are very absorbent because their core is made from sustainably harvested fluff pulp.
They also utilize plant-based PLA, which is a plant-based plastic that’s derived from corn. (Isn’t that interesting?)
Both companies’ diapers are processed without the use of chlorine and they don’t contain any latex or artificial fragrance, which is great because that stuff has no business in baby products if we’re being honest.
However, they also contain polyethylene, polypropylene, and spandex.
Are they biodegradable?
Since both companies throw around words like “eco-friendly” and “sustainable” of course you are going to wonder if the diapers are biodegradable or not.
The diapers do contain some “better” ingredients (like the plant-based PLA that’s derived from corn as mentioned above), and that’s a step in the right direction. But, since both diapers contain petroleum-based plastics, they are not biodegradable at the moment.
Both Honest Co and Hello Bello have listed polyethylene, polypropylene, and spandex in their ingredient lists. Unfortunately, they will end up in a landfill.
If you are looking for diapers that are truly biodegradable, definitely check into cloth diapering!
I think it’s important to mention that, while they’re not perfect, both brands of diapers are a definite improvement over traditional diapers when it comes to safety.
Both brands have taken steps to move towards using more sustainable ingredients (like plant-based PLA and fluff pulp).
They’ve also removed chlorine processing, artificial fragrance, latex, lotions, and more.
So, are Hello Bello diapers non-toxic or not? What about Honest?
It’s good to see certain ingredients have been removed from these diapers, but to be straight-forward and answer your question as to whether or not they are really non-toxic or not – the answer is no, not completely.
However, they are still a better option when compared to the traditional diapers on the shelves and they are headed in the right direction overall.
Now, what about the absorbency of these diapers? Do they even work? The last thing you want is to spend a bunch of money on some diapers that leak, right?
And, which diaper is more absorbent – Hello Bello or The Honest Company?
Both companies have taken strides to create a very absorbent diaper.
They both utilize the same ingredient (fluff pulp that is sustainably harvested) to create an absorbent core that quickly soaks up liquids.
Honest Co. diapers have a wetness indicator for all diaper sizes, while Hello Bello diapers only have an indicator on sizes newborn through 2.
Both diapers have good absorbency for normal, daytime use.
But, if your baby tends to have leaky diapers at night, the Hello Bello diaper subscription may not be the right choice for you as they have no overnight diaper option at this time.
You can, however, purchase Hello Bello overnight diapers separately.
Honest Co, on the other hand, does offer an overnight option that may be more equipped to handle a heavy wetter.
Let’s talk about the baby wipes
The diapers are definitely the stars of the show, but since baby wipes are also part of both companies’ diaper subscription services, we have to talk about them too.
How do they compare? Which company has the best baby wipes?
If you’ve read our article about baby-safe stain removers, then you know how much we like to refer to the EWG when it comes to the safety of baby products.
After a quick search, it turns out that Honest baby wipes are EWG verified, while Hello Bello baby wipes are not.
Hello Bello’s baby wipes are rated a 2 on the EWG scale. This is still a decent score as it’s considered to be of low hazard. The ingredient that’s impacting the score is sodium benzoate.
But, EWG-verified is better.
The winner here is Honest baby wipes.
Hello Bello has other products that are EWG-verified. Hopefully, they will step up their game with their baby wipes soon!
Which is better? Hello Bello or Honest Co diaper subscription?
After digging into these two popular diaper subscription companies, I would have to say Honest Co is the better option despite being a tiny bit more expensive.
This is mostly due to the company’s overnight diaper option, wetness indicator, and EWG-verified baby wipes.
However, Hello Bello is still a good option and definitely better than your usual diapers and wipes as they are actively taking steps in the right direction!
