14 Old Wives’ Tales For Baby Gender Prediction

Last Updated On August 27, 2022 by Elizabeth Morgan Leave a Comment

We find out the genders of our twin babies this week and are so excited! (Update: we have boy girl twins. Read the birth story here.) Adam and I have had a lot of fun predicting what we think they will be based on old wives tales for baby gender prediction. We’re 16 weeks along right now (our due date is October 3rd) and we’re so excited to start nesting once we know what our twins will be.

We have researched a lot of the different ways to predict if you’re having a boy or a girl. We’re not sure how these work with it being twins since we could be having 2 boys, 2 little girls, or 1 of each. We’ve still enjoyed learning about it though. Here are the old wives tales for predicting baby genders that we researched and what they’re predicting that we’re having.

1. Heartrate

The old wives tale about heartrate is that if your baby’s heartrate is under 140 beats per minute, it’s a baby boy. If your baby’s heartrate is over 140 beats per minute, it’s a girl.

At our 13 week appointment the doctor said that baby A and baby B both had heartrates around 165 beats per minute.

My answer: Girl

2. Chinese Gender Predictor

The Chinese Gender Predictor is a test that will determine which gender you’re having from an ancient Chinese gender chart. You put in your age at conception and the month you conceived.

My answer: Boy

3. Wedding Ring Test

The way that you perform this test is to put your wedding ring on a chain or string, lay down, and hold it over your belly. If the ring moves in a circular motion then it’s a girl, if it moves side to side then it’s a boy. Here’s a video on how to do this test.

This test was hard to do. The first couple of times we tried, the ring didn’t move at all. Finally, it moved in a little bit of a circle. We decided to do this again since it’s twins and the second time it moved side to side a little.

My answer: 1 girl and 1 boy

4. Morning Sickness

Having morning sickness is a sign that you are carrying a girl, whereas not having morning sickness or not having much of it is a sign that you’re having a boy.

I’ve had terrible morning sickness. Mine came at night. It was really bad from week 4-15 and still hasn’t completely gone away. I’ve lost weight from this and am almost back to my pre-pregnancy weight.

My answer: Girl

See this test here.

5. Cravings

Baby Center says that if you’re craving salty foods, meat, or cheese then you’re having a boy. If you’re craving sweets, sugary foods, or spicy food, then you’re carrying a baby girl.

I normally crave and eat a lot of salty foods, but I’ve been eating a lot less of that since getting pregnant. In my first trimester the only food I wanted to eat was fruit. Now that I’m in my second trimester, I’m craving all the baked goods. I also crave spicy foods, like Indian food.

My answer: Girl

6. Heartburn

Having heartburn is a sign that you’re having a girl and that your baby will have a lot of hair.

I’ve been experiencing heartburn almost every night since I was about 8-9 weeks pregnant. If anyone has any tips for preventing this or helping with it, please let me know.

My answer: Girl

See this test here.

7. Side Mom Sleeps On While Pregnant

The myth is that when pregnant women sleep on their right side, it means they’re pregnant with a girl and sleeping on their left side means they’re pregnant with a boy.

Before getting pregnant I always slept on my back or on my left side. I’ve noticed that in the last 2 months I’ve been sleeping on my right side. I can’t fall asleep on my left side or back anymore.

My answer: Girl

See this test here.

8. Belly Positioning

If you carry the baby high in your belly, it’s a girl. If you carrying low in your belly, then it’s a boy.

My belly is still very small, but it’s getting bigger and rounder at the bottom and the top hasn’t gotten much bigger yet.

My answer: Boy

See this test here.

9. Mayan Gender Calendar

The Mayan’s used math and astronomy to create a calendar that predicted baby genders. The way to predict this is to see if your age at conception is odd or even and if the month you conceived in is odd or even. If both are odd or both are even, then it’s a girl. If one is odd and one is even, then it’s a boy.

My age was even and the month was odd.

My answer: Boy

See this test here.

10. Balance

The old wives tale on this one is that if you’re really coordinated and have good balance, you’re carrying a girl. If you’re clumsy and losing your balance a lot, you’re carrying a boy.

Somedays I don’t notice anything different, other days I’m super clumsy and can’t balance.

My answer: Maybe one of each

See this test here.

11. Dad’s Weight

If the baby’s dad is gaining weight along with the mom, then you’re carrying a girl. You’re carrying a boy if the dad hasn’t gained any weight.

My husband, Adam’s weight has not changed since I got pregnant.

My answer: Boy

12. Headaches

Women who get a lot of headaches during pregnancy are believed to be carrying boys and women who do not experience this are carrying girls.

I have not had many headaches at all while pregnant, just a few while I had a cold.

My answer: Girl

See this test here.

13. Skin and Hair

If your skin and hair are not looking as good and you have more acne, then it’s a girl. It’s a boy if you have a nice glow, your skin is better than normal, and your hair looks nice and glossy. Also, carrying a boy is said to make your body hair grow thicker and faster.

My skin has been better than before I was pregnant. I haven’t noticed a change with my hair.

My answer: Boy

See this test here.

14. Mother’s Intuition

Some people claim that mothers know the gender of their babies before they find out from the ultrasound or at birth. About 60% of mothers are able to guess this correctly.

I have a feeling that our twins are both girls.

My answer: Girl

See this test here.

You might be wondering “Are baby gender predictors accurate?” The answer is no, there is not scientific data to support them. It is still really fun to look at them and assess if any of them are right when you do find out what you’re having.

My guess is that we’re having 2 girls and Adam’s is that we’re having 1 boy and 1 girl.

Update: our twins are 1 boy and 1 girl! They are fraternal DiDi twins. This means that the wedding ring test was right for us. No wonder all the other old wives’ tales for baby gender tests were pretty split for us between boy and girl!
