Pizza dough:

- Warm water – Make sure the water you use for your pizza crust is warm. Warm water will activate your yeast to make your dough rise. Do not use hot water though, this will kill the yeast.
- Yeast – I use a packet of instant rise yeast. It’s equivalent to 2 1/4 teaspoons of yeast.
Sauce and toppings:
- BBQ sauce – You can use any vegan brand of BBQ sauce. I use Sweet Baby Ray’s.
- Cilantro – The cilantro really freshens up each bite and makes it more flavorful. You can use green onions instead if you’re not a fan of cilantro.
- Pineapple – I use canned pineapple when I make this recipe, but you can use fresh pineapple instead if you have that.
Step by step instructions
Step 1 – In a large mixing bowl combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for about 2 minutes until it looks a little frothy and the yeast is coming up. This is activating the yeast.
Step 2 – Add flour, salt, and olive oil to your yeast mixture. Mix it all together. Cover and let it rise for an hour.
Step 3 – While your dough is rising, chop your red onion into thin slices.
Step 4 – Toss your chickpeas in 2 teaspoons of barbeque sauce.
Step 5 – When your dough is done rising, roll it out on a 14″ pizza pan or baking sheet.
Step 6 – Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Spread 1/2 cup of barbeque sauce on the pizza dough. Top it with chickpeas, pineapple, and red onions.
Step 7 – Put your pizza in the oven and bake it for 27 minutes until the crust is golden brown. Top with chopped cilantro.
Tips and tricks
- Slice your red onion as thin as you can so that it cooks faster and gets softer.
- This dough recipe makes a thick pizza crust. You can use 1/2-3/4 of the dough recipe for a thinner crust.
- My recipe doesn’t call for vegan cheese because that’s how I prefer it. You can add vegan mozzarella to it though. Put it on after the sauce and before the toppings.
- You could also add jackfruit to your pizza. Toss it in a little bit of the BBQ sauce first.
- You can finish your pizza with green onions instead of cilantro if you’re not a cilantro fan.
